Generally speaking, winter is an ideal time to trim many tree species. While we tend to neglect our yards and landscaping in winter months, it is a good idea to consider getting ahead of the spring rush for outdoor maintenance services. And, if you are considering buying or selling a home, insurability can be a factor to get in front of dangerous trees before the market heats up in warmer months.

• FACT: Trees are typically dormant from November to March in southwest Ohio. Removing dead or broken branches while trees are dormant strengthens the tree and can help prevent further breaks when snow and ice collect.
• FACT: For trees near your home, other structures, or power lines, trimming or removal is safest in winter with higher visibility to the hazards when trees are bare of leaves.
• FACT: If you noticed an unhealthy or diseased tree during the growing season, winter is the best time. Disease cannot spread and is less stressful on the tree. Consider a certified arborist* in evaluating this situation.  
• FICTION: All types of trees are suitable for winter trimming. Do not trim flower-bearing, fruit-bearing, and those prone to winter freeze injury in the winter months.
